Confessions of a Girl-Geek
I admit it – I am a Girl-Geek. Now before everybody bombards me with emails about the use of the word geek, don’t. Ok? Just leave the PC nonsense at the door and accept my geekiness – we’ll both be happier for it, trust me on this.
I love gadgets of all varieties. When I got my first computer I wanted to know what made it tic – both literally and figuratively – so I did a course in computer building. At the same time I did a course in MS Office and I know there are plenty among you who are groaning, head in hand, about the evils of MS anything – so I shall clarify this by saying that I love playing with all software programmes – MS Office just happens to be the most common and the easiest to get your paws on to use on a daily basis.
Cell phones stumped me for a while – not because of the phones but because the word lover in me had some issues with text-speak. Once I had that sorted I never looked back. Blackberry’s and iPhones produce in me much the same response you see in other women when faced with the new spring range at Fashion Week.
Two digital cameras – one small, one large. Both of which I take awful photos with and one can but wonder what horrors I would be producing if these small digital wonders weren’t correcting at least some of my stuff ups.
I am oddly enough still not the owner of an iPod -but only because I have not yet found one I want. Not because I don’t like them – au contraire – mine just hasn’t shown itself to me yet. All its accessories have – the docking station, the earphones, the armbands for the gym. And I admit I am falling quite soundly in love with Master 18′s iPod Touch…
Printers, portable drives, routers, modems – all fascinate me.
But my love above all is laptops. What other gadget can a girl carry with her and get so much joy from? Ok I can think of one other gadget – and those I am fond of too – but that’s the subject of a different post entirely.
I love that I can carry a laptop with me, that I can sit down in my favourite cafe and write while drinking great coffee. I love that I can sit up in bed, as I am right now, and read blogs, check email, and write. I can use them for gaming, for music, for reading, for research, watch movies – there is little I can’t do with my laptop.
Although I can, I have no desire to build computers. I can write some basic script. I can tweak a blog template with the best of them and in my time I have written my fair share of databases and complex spreadsheets and enjoyed every minute.
But that is not where my passion – or my obsession lays - it is with using the gadgets (yes of all varieties – shrug). When I open a laptop, I open a window on a new world and I can spend hours gazing through it and drinking in the world.
It’s wonderful.
I should say I have a similar passion and obsession with shoes, Bruce Springsteen bootlegs, books, caramel, chocolate and champagne. Preferably all at the same time….
